Greek Handmade statue with snakes, on a marble base.

"Snake goddess" is a type of figurine depicting a woman holding a snake in each hand, as were found in Minoan archaeological sites in Crete.

Bare breasts and snakes symbolize euphoria and fertility.

The worship of the Goddess of Fertility is also defined as the Great Mother

These two figurines are today exhibited at the Herakleion Archeological Museum in Crete.

The snake was Symbol of healing, guardian and protector of sacred places and objects.

The ancient Greeks revered snakes for their wisdom and healing powers (as in the cult of Asklepios, the god of medicine), but also feared them for their tremendous powers.

The snake appears as an aggressive defender in many ancient Greek myths; in fact the name 'Medusa', the snake-haired Gorgon translates from the Greek as 'guardian' or 'protectress'.

The Romans regarded the snake as the continuing spirit (or 'genius') of the family unit
