Greek handmde bronze cycladic idol on marble base, museum copy.
The figurines are the first example of art of ancient Greek culture. They were found on the islands of the Cyclades and were built about 5,000 years ago.
Most of the figurines were found in tombs and some in houses, sanctuaries and settlements. The oldest Cycladic figurine was found in Saliago, an island between Paros and Antiparos.
At times, different views have been expressed about their importance.
They have been interpreted as substitutes for human sacrifice or as images of revered ancestors, as psychopaths and even as toys for the dead to play with.
Another interpretation wants the figurines figures, similar to the heroes and nymphs of the Greek pantheon.
